First Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Adventure in Cameroon
Welcome behind the scenes of an extraordinary journey filled with warmth, passion for ultrasound, and the discovery of a fascinating culture!
Arrival in Cameroon
The adventure began the moment I arrived at Douala Airport, warmly welcomed by Dr. Yannick Ndefo and his charming wife, Dr. Raissa Ndefo. Their kindness and hospitality set the tone for a journey that would be rich on both professional and personal levels.
Cultural Discovery and Workshop Preparations
The next day, before diving into the technical preparations for the workshop, I had the chance to visit the Douala Maritime Museum a valuable opportunity to learn about Cameroon’s history, particularly the evolution of its “people of the water,” whose story resonates with strength and inspiration. This cultural immersion was the perfect prelude to the intense workshop days ahead.
Meeting with Professor Metogo Mbengono Epse Njoki and the Hospital Visit
An enriching meeting with Professor Metogo Mbengono Epse Njoki at the central hospital was also on the agenda, where we discussed the role of ultrasound in emergency and critical care. This hands-on demonstration of POCUS (Point-of-Care Ultrasound) showcased its impact on improving patient care, confirming the growing interest in ultrasound within these specialties.
Workshop Day: Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Begins
The big day finally arrived! The workshop brought together 10 physicians, including orthopedic surgeons, a radiologist, sports medicine doctors, and a radiology technician. Over three intensive days, we covered the foundations of musculoskeletal ultrasound, explored different joints, and discussed common pathologies. It was an immersive experience in technique and practice, enhancing each participant’s skills and creating unforgettable synergy.
Heartfelt Thanks
This adventure would not have been possible without the invaluable support of many. A huge thank you to:
- Dr. Yannick Ndefo for his dedication and impeccable organization,
- Dr. Leonard Tankeng for his essential support,
- Boris Njifack, founder of Alaray Studio for capturing photos and sound that will keep these memories alive,
- Drs. Raissa Ndefo and Erica Maptue for their assistance with logistics and organization, as well as introducing me to Cameroonian culinary delights—a true taste journey!
- Fujifilm Sonosite Europe France for their logistical support and providing the EDGE II ultrasound machine, an indispensable technical partner.
What’s Next?
This first in a series I hope will continue was only the beginning. Next stop: Yaoundé, to participate in the SCAR Congress in Anesthesiology and Critical Care, where I’ll be leading workshops… in ultrasound, of course!
Stay tuned for the next chapter of this adventure!
